You have a pet and you enjoy snuggling with them, but they’ve got fleas! As a pet owner you’ve probably had a flea problem at one time or another. Those pesky little jumping insects drive you crazy. They are especially annoying to the one member of the family who has the tastiest of blood. There is always one person that gets bit the most.
What can be done?
Most people begin with the almighty flea bath and buy a flea collar but do they work? Baths are great but not for the reason you think they are. The old fashioned flea collar is just that, old fashioned, and needs to be retired. You are welcome to try all the over-the-counter products you’d like but most times, without professional help, you are in for a long battle. That is why you are here reading this article about flea control. This is why you need PacWest Exterminators.
First we need to understand the biology of the flea and how to interrupt the process. Fleas do not magically appear on cats and dogs; they were brought into your yard hitchhiking on some other animal. The most common animals that bring in fleas are possums and rodents. These animals visit your dog’s food and water or find harborage somewhere in your yard and leave fleas behind that find your pet. It is important to note that these fleas cannot survive on human blood alone; they need your pet or their original host to survive.
The first line of defense is any of the myriad of animal treatment options that you can purchase from your veterinarian. This is more important than even the flea dip. Get your pet washed and then properly treated so we cut off the fleas’ access to their main food source. Now that the adults are unable to get their traditional blood meal and we’ve cleaned the pet from debris that fleas can feed off of, namely dried blood, we can begin to treat the problem. There is no effective pesticide control without veterinarian treatment of the pet.
Next we look at the flea’s life cycle to interrupt it and control the problem at the source. Fleas experience a complete metamorphosis. This means they experience all the stages of insect life: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In the egg and pupa stage they are completely protected from any treatment available.
Adult fleas live in and around where they can find food but, they cannot lay their eggs in hot dry areas. Larval fleas need damp cool places to live and grow. These larvae also need access to their primary food, the waste (dried blood) of adult fleas. This is usually found on bedding and places where pets or source animals rest. All pet bedding must be washed and homes vacuumed to remove any possible food source for these larvae.
Once the pet is protected and the fleas have been cut off from their food source PacWest Exterminators can come to you rescue with our Flea Control Treatment. Pets and people will need to stay clear of all areas we treat as we use a combination of flea adulticide and growth regulator for control. The adulticide knocks down the adult population while the growth regulator stops the larvae from ever having babies. This comprehensive treatment plan may need to be repeated until the infestation is eliminated.
