The city of Artesia was founded in 1875 when the Artesia School District was formed and is named for the abundance of artesian wells in the area. The water supply and good land was initially used for farming sugar beets and grapes and later, in the 1920’s, was used by Portuguese and Dutch dairy farmers. These dairymen turned Artesia into one of the most important dairy production areas of Southern California. In the 1950’s these dairies were forced to move to Chino or the Central Valley as the land in Artesia was purchased by developers to build homes.
