Fountain Valley was initially called “Gospel Swamps” by the residents and early settlers were inundated by the swampy terrain. In the 1890’s many drainage canals were built and the swampy land was useable after much effort. The most economically important crops planted here were sugar beets and beans until the 1930’s.

In the 30’s land was sold off and 'truck crops' became the focus of land usage. This included things such as strawberries, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, corn, beans, lettuce carrots, spinach, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, parsley, peas, and squash. Fountain Valley was incorporated in 1957 and gets its name from artesian wells in the area and the plentiful supply of local water. The dynamite growth of this city in the 1960’s was carefully planned out before hand and consequently it is one of the best planned cities in the region.
