Tustin traces its roots back to Columbus Tustin who bought the land in the early 1870’s and tried to establish a city of Tustin. He was unsuccessful in his attempts to sell this land, with its artesian wells and Sycamore trees, and he was eventually willing to give away tracks of land if someone would be willing to build a homestead there. He also failed to convince the railroads to make his city the southern end of the railroad and Santa Ana won out. The initial crops here were apricots and walnuts but by the 1900’s they were replaced with Valencia Oranges.

The City was incorporated in 1927 with a population of 900. While the country was mired in WWII three military bases were established in unincorporated areas: “Santa Ana Army Air Base, the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, and the navy's Lighter-Than-Air Base (where the huge hangers housed coast-patrolling blimps).” Between 1950 and 1970 the city grew exponentially as track homes replaced orchards and land had to be annexed. The period between 1955 and 1965 was contentious. The Marine Corp Air Station Tustin, established in 1942, was a major feature of the city until it closed in 1999. The blimp hangars are still visible on the site and are historical landmarks that may one day become museums. 

 

Ant and Rat Control
